Eric's Road to Law School

Greeting family and friends,

First and foremost, I want to thank you for taking the time out for clicking and sharing this link. My name is Eric Daniel Hewlett.

Life growing up on the southside of Chicago, Illinois, in the foster care system, was challenging because it was rooted in poverty, family upheaval, and frequent episodes of violence. As I struggled to overcome the obstacles of my childhood and young adult years, I also learned to value the smaller things in life and how to deal with hardships...both great and small.

At the beginning, August 2012, I ventured from my hometown with great intent to earn my Bachelors of Science Degree in Criminal Justice from Alabama Agricultural and Mechanical University, a HBCU (Historically Black College or University). As a first generation college student, from the southside of Chicago, I know it's difficult and takes great humility to ask for help.

My experience at Alabama A&M University has been exceptional; there is no institution that I would attend if I could do it all over again. My first year was undoubtely the toughest year financially. I was not granted any scholarships. Therefore, I nearly took out $20,000 worth of loans in order to stay in good financial status; I knew this was a huge investment. I continued to pray and ask God for ways I can receive money to pay for school. During my sophomore year, I earned a deserving GPA of a 3.77, which I received a merit scholarship to pay for my tuition for the remainder of my time at Alabama A&M University. May 6, 2016, I graduated with Magna Cum Laude, earning my Bachelors of Science Degree in Criminal Justice from Alabama A&M University; one of the most memorable moments of my life.

With that being said, I have reached  the next educational phase of my life, law school! I will be continuing my education at The Indiana University McKinney School of Law starting in the fall of 2016. I have received the Midwest tuition, which lowers my tuition by $6,000; I received two scholarships, a Merit scholarship and a Lefstein scholarship, both totaling $22,275. Currently, I am $5,000 short and I'm humbly asking for your assistance to help defray the balance of my cost of attendance at The Indiana University McKinney School of Law. I know this is an immense investment that will pay off long-term.

I feel determined to help address and revise government policies affecting children in poverty, children in families damaged by drugs and alcohol, and children who are left confused and powerless by a society that treats them inhumanely. I have the qualities of facts, evidence, reason, logic, and the understanding of science to help change policy. I want to study law so that I will be equipped to cultivate my family and community with legal matters. I am certain that I will be an excellent law student. I have the mind, passion, and drive to do so. Many men in cities similar to Chicago feel as if their choices are limited. Young men live on the edge of the law because they have few opportunities for employment and no encouragement to excel. I will show them that they, too, can achieve their goals if they work hard and persevere.

At this point, I am actively working a 40/hr week job over the summer to help fund my education at The Indiana University McKinney School of Law. I learned about the power in numbers as a tool for advocacy. Therefore, I am humbly asking for your help, your sharing power, and your contributions in order to help me enroll in law school, so I can begin the process to become an advocate to my community. This is my fate and I will be so thankful for you all assisting me. I know I can't accomplish my Juris Doctorate alone.

Again, family, friends, and contributors, I want to thank you for taking the time to read through my story. Any contributions will be directed to covering the cost of attendance to The Indiana University McKinney School of Law.

With much appreciation,
Eric Daniel Hewlett
