Tucker Bartholomew’s Spinal Rehab

Donation protected
On Saturday, August 29, Tucker was boating with friends near Nashville, TN when he was injured in a diving accident. His friends were able to get him out of the water and to the Marina where he was transported to Vanderbilt Medical Center (the doctors, nurses, care partners and staff have been truly amazing).

He has an “incomplete” spinal cord injury at his C5 vertebrae. He has undergone two spinal surgeries to stabilize the cervical spine. Tucker has diminished movement and weakness in extremities and trunk. The majority of this weakness is in his left arm/hand and leg/foot - particularly, the fine motor movement of fingers and toes. Things change daily - movement where we didn’t see it before. Today is day 7 of the injury and Tucker has experienced huge improvements in muscle function, which has enlarged our own imagination of what the next day might look like. The Occupational and Physical Therapists have pushed him in amazing ways - yesterday, Tucker walked around the Neuro ICU floor (about 225 steps) with their assistance. And when he finished he asked if he could take a second lap before agreeing he need sit and rest!

Dr. Stephens, Tucker’s surgeon is hopeful about his potential for recovering functionality and reminds us that patience is so important in recovery - adopt the long view and work hard. He said we will know the extent of recover in about 18 months. To that end Tucker will be transported to The Shepherd Center in Atlanta Georgia beginning Sept 9, 2020 for a period of acute inpatient rehab (read about their amazing work at: Shepherd.org) and followed by differing degrees of outpatient rehab for another 12 - 18 months.

Tucker has solid insurance coverage, for which we are grateful. The go-fund me will help with all new types of expenses associated with the next 18 months of rehabilitation: deductibles, travel expenses for family, equipment and gear needs, additional therapy needs, and other expenses related Tucker’s transition.

We don’t know how to put dollar figure on this fund, but GoFundMe allows you to make adjustments up and down along the way as expenses are known. <div class="gfm-embed" data-url="https://www.gofundme.com/f/24n9sko1ao/widget/large/"></div><script defer src="https://www.gofundme.com/static/js/embed.js"></script>

Following Tucker’s recovery remaining funds will be donated to spinal research or centers providing care for people that may not have access to the kind of community we have in you.

We are grateful for you and for your kindnesses and prayers for us. We will keep you updated on Tucker’s progress through rehab.
