Hi everyone, I am creating this fundraiser to help support my dear friend Katrin as she has just had her world turned upside down with her 3 year old son Siyam’s very recent diagnosis with Leukaemia.
Katrin is a single mom living in Golden BC who owns a BNB here on the outskirts of town. Like many of us, Kat has had to reorganize her business due to Covid this year, it’s been a tough battle to make things work with not being able to run her business as usual and balance single parenting and making ends meet.
One week ago, Kat had taken Siyam into our local clinic to get a few lumps that had appeared suddenly on his head looked at. Previously swollen lymph nodes had been identified by the doctor as normal but to be monitored. The doctor ordered an X-ray of his head where there was nothing abnormal to be seen. After a swelling occurred in his left eye and more bumps occurred on his head just over Thanksgiving weekend Katrin asked for bloodwork to be done which the family doctor agreed on. The lab on Tuesday revealed his blood counts being so low that the Doctor called having to come into hospital immediately. On Tuesday night Siyam was given a blood transfusion and on Wednesday morning we got flown to the Vancouver Children’s Hospital with the air ambulance. On Friday evening the diagnosis Leukaemia got confirmed and the chemotherapy treatment started on Saturday.
As her friend I can only imagine how upside down her life had turned in the blink of an eye. They are now staying at the Ronald McDonald House and will likely have to be there for 8-9 months while Siyam undergoes treatment at the BC Children's Hospital. The doctors told her to expect to continue treatments for the next 3 years. There are so many unknowns for them ahead but Kat is doing her best to be strong for her little boy.
I wanted to create this fund to help reduce the likely financial stress and pressure that she will face during this already stressful time ahead. I hope with some help in covering travel costs and additional costs during this time this funding can help her focus on Siyam and being there for him with one less thing to worry about.
