Dan Marks Cancer Journey

On October 28th, 2019, my sister Lisa and her husband Dan Marks received the terrible news that Dan has Stage 4 Metastatic Rectal Cancer. Unfortunately, the cancer has metastasized to his liver. Since then Dan has undergone 8 months of Chemo and Radiation treatments as well as his first major surgery. On July 29th, he had his gallbladder and half of his liver removed. Since the surgery he has had a tube in his abdomen to help drain the fluid off his liver, however if the draining doesn’t slowdown, he will have to undergo another surgery to put a stint in his liver which will prolong the healing process.

As of right now, he is set to have another major surgery at the end of October to remove the remaining cancer. Dan received the news around the same time he started his new job, which means he does not qualify for short term / long term disability, and both he and Lisa have been paying out of pocket for all his medical expenses and insurance premiums. As you can all imagine, this has all come to be a difficult financial situation to navigate in these already trying times. As it stands, it is unknown when he will be able to return to his job.

My sister, Lisa, was raised in Wamego, Kansas.   Dan was raised in Independence Missouri. He is a Navy Veteran of submarine service. USS Cavalla, SSN 684.  They currently live in Overland Park, Kansas with their two dogs Mickey and Milo.  They have grown children, 3 grandsons and 2 more on the way.
