Cardiff Met Archers basketball annual charity event 17th-18th of May 2025!
Hi we are Abigail and Ethan and we are this years charity event captains. We are so exited to be chosen as the first youth captains hosting this event.
The 24 hour charity event is a great opportunity to bring the community together for a great cause. Across all the Archers age groups (from u8's to seniors) and all abilities players come together to ensure that basketball is played continuously for a 24 hour period. The teams are split into two charities where all funds raised will be shared between the two causes.
We would like to introduce our two charities...
Abigail's charity:
I have chosen FND Hope UK for the charity that I will be representing for the game for many reasons.
Functional neurologic disorder (FND) refers to a neurological condition caused by changes in how brain networks work, rather than changes in the structure of the brain itself, as seen in many other neurological disorders. Physical symptoms of FND are genuine but cannot be explained by changes in the brain structure. The exact cause of FND is unknown.
The charity is very close to my families heart because my dad has FND and we live with this disability on a daily basis as a family. FND isn’t well known within the public domain and with some medical settings.
This is why FND hope needs as much support as possible to support all patients that suffer from FND and bring awareness to others to enhance the understanding required for those suffering with FND.
FND Hope UK is part of the first and only global patient-led charity for people with Functional Neurological Disorder. Originating as a grassroots campaign, it uncovers the hidden world of FND and empowers those affected to live their best life as possible.
The mission for FND Hope UK is to promote awareness, support affected individuals, and advance research for the prevention, treatment and recovery of FND.
I am looking forward to the game so is my father who will be taking part in the wheelchair session of the game! Go Archers!!
Ethan's charity:
My selected charity is the Youth Sport Trust (YST) who aim to improve children and young people’s physical, mental and social wellbeing by increasing levels of physical activity. Through providing a variety of programmes for young people in order to set them on a path of healthy habits for life. At present, only 47% of children are meeting the UK’s Chief Medical Officers’ guidelines for being physically active and this is something I feel strongly about affecting a change in.
I have personally benefited from interaction with the YST through my role as a Young Ambassador. Since the age of 9 I have received training from YST to help me deliver physical activity opportunities to my peers. This led me to taking up a volunteer coaching role with the Archers for the last 5 years. I have also progressed to the platinum level (highest grade) of YA’s and secured a place on the National Steering Group for Wales as the sole representative for the Cardiff local authority region.
I feel passionate about raising funds for Youth Sport Trust as through their Young Ambassador programme they have given me many opportunities to develop my leadership skills and help me to provide other young people with positive sporting experiences.
As an active basketball player myself I understand the value of physical activity and I would like to raise money for this charity who I believe can play an active role in improving the picture for young people, as set out in their new manifesto https://www.youthsporttrust.org/news-insight/advocacy/manifesto backed by Sir Mo Farah through “Mo’s Mission”.
