Adam Martin, the guy that has a heart almost as big as he is, needs our help! He has helped us all out so many times and it's time we returned the favor! Adam is considered part of our Pangle family. Cody and I have always called him our adopted at son because he was always hanging out at our house and playing with our boys; Owen 7 and Jaxon 5. He didn't have to, but he wanted to. They don't realize he is 20 years older; they just see a big teddy bear that will do whatever they want; even when we don't want him to. He just wants to see them smile.
A week before Easter Adams eye started swelling to the point to where he couldn't open his right eye. His right eye began to drain, nothing crazy just draining. All of a sudden, his right nostril and entire right side of his face started draining and drooping. That week was inventory at his store, so he was working overtime and going home to play with Harper any chance he could. At the time, Adam was trying to self medicate with sinus medications. Then the lovely Johna stepped in and urged him to go see their doctor then forced him to the ER.
Adam went to Mercy where he stayed for 8 hours; they did 2 CT scans, one regular and one with the contrast and found no irregularities. Adam then consulted with Boozman Hof which found he had 3rd nerve palsy; basically the 3rd nerve in your brain is paralyzed and you have to go through a self recovery process that can take up to six months. To be safe, Dr. Hof referred him to meet with a Neurologist at Mercy later that day.
So in reference, Adam was rushed to the ER (Friday), sent to Boozman Hof and Nuerologist (Monday). After meeting with the Neurologist, he immediately said it was the 3rd nerve. For those of you who know Adam, he was not settling with that response and challenged the Dr. on his responses which lead to the Doctor agreeing to do an MRI.
Two MRIs latter it was confirmed Adam had a benign tumor above his right cheekbone, which is directly behind his right eye. Adam was then referred to Northwest Arkansas Neuroscience institute and saw Dr. John Barr from Harvard Medical.
Dr. John Barr had Adam, Johna and his parents come to his office to inform them he was not comfortable performing this type of surgery on Adam and should keep his options open; maybe go to Boston or even the Mayo Clinic would be his best options.
Needless to say they went home that day with heavy hearts and not very optimistic with the outlook; at least Adam didn't. When you have a Harvard Dr. tell you he’s not comfortable performing surgery to remove a tumor, you begin to lose hope.
A couple days pass and Adam received a phone call from Dr. Mayshan Ghiassi, he wanted Adam to come in for a consultation regarding the tumor that was just discover from the MRI. Dr. Ghiassi and his twin brother Mahan both have an office at the institute and have privileges at Washington Regional. After reviewing the MRI, they felt confident surgery could be preformed and they could remove the tumor in Adams Skull, however he and several others doctors which had consulted Adam felt his right eye vision would be gone. No questions asked, Adam would rather give up vision than living with a cancerous tumor that could ultimately cause blindness, and potentially kill him.
On April 18th Adam had the tumor which crushed his 3rd nerve 100% removed. Adam was in surgery for approximately 9 hours but came out like a champ. Everything went well, his hospital stay was only 2 day’s which he was expecting a week hospital stay or longer.
After returning home Adam began to have seizures which landed him in the ER 3 times in the course of 2 days being home. Dr’s had to up his meds and put Adam on several anti seizure medications.
After following up with the Dr. a week later, Adam developed an infection on his incision from surgery. Antibiotics were prescribed and he was sent back home.
Yesterday which was May 11th; Adam went back to the Dr. because the infection wasn’t healing. Immediately the doctors scheduled Adam for surgery today so they can clean and remove the infection to help the healing process.
Unfortunately, with all of this, he is unable to work. As you all know, medical bills can add up in a hurry. On top of that, the everyday expenses of owning a home, and taking care of a family can add up just as fast. The only thing Adam and Johna need to worry about at this time, is getting Adam healed. Let’s do what we can to ease the burden of bills while he is in recovery. It is going to be a long road ahead, but with our help, maybe we can speed it up a bit!!! Every little bit counts! Thank you all in advance for taking the time to read this. God Bless!
