Help me teach 2nd grade during a pandemic

Donation protected
Thanks for taking the time to read this. I’m asking for your support to build a safe, engaging, and culturally & linguistically responsive classroom environment for my students. I am a first year 2nd grade teacher in a Title 1 school in Houston, which means that the vast majority of my students come from low-income families. Because America does not take care of its low-income, Black and Hispanic communities, this also means that my school can only provide me a limited amount of resources. Additionally, we are starting school virtually, then transitioning to in-person learning in early September, so I’ll need to set up 2 learning environments.

My first concern is the health of my students, colleagues, and their families. The district I work in (in a Black & Latino, low-income, immigrant community in Texas) has been hard hit by the pandemic, and I need supplies to keep my students as sanitized and safe as possible. I’m also concerned about my students’ emotional well-being given the massive upheaval and loss of life their communities have experienced. More than ever, kids need cheerleaders and supporters. Finally, I know my students will need intensive academic support in order to continue growing and learning.

If you know me, you know I would empty my bank account for my students if I had to, but I have been urged to rely on my community for support instead. If you can find it in your heart to support a first year teacher, my students and I will be so, so incredibly grateful. Even the smallest donations make a difference (many of the lessons and teacher resources I’ve been eyeing are under $5!). If you’re interested in seeing what I do with my kiddos this year, you can follow my teacher IG @learningwithlanguage. Thank you so much!

Here are some of the ways I’m planning on using these funds:
- Masks, hand sanitizer, and disinfecting supplies
- Individualized school supplies
- Outdoor seating
- Mail communication with families
- Engaging virtual activities and lesson plans from Teachers Pay Teachers
- Bilingual and Spanish-language books, posters, and activities
- Building a culturally responsive classroom library
- Flexible seating
