23andMe tests for my AP Biology students
Donation protected
My name is Devyani Bhadkamkar and I teach at Leadership Public Schools in Richmond California. I teach AP Biology to an exceptional group of 27 students. During our genetics unit, my students saw my 23andMe test and were incredibly interested to learn about their own genetics and ancestry. LPS Richmond serves primarily low-income, first generation students, which makes the purchase of these kits beyond what most students are able to contribute.
I aim to provide rich learning experiences in the sciences in the hopes that we get more diverse representation in STEM fields. For me personally, being able to apply what I was learning in class to my own life, experiences, and interests was one of the key things that kept me in the field. Especially for individuals with diverse heritages or complicated family histories, connecting science and data to family history is incredibly meaningful.
23andme kits are $79 - $99 (can get some in bulk so I am fundraising for the cost of 27 tests, as well as shipping (which for three batches of kits is $315). Any amount helps! If you cannot donate, sending the link along to a friend is also helpful!
Thank you so much for your time, it means a lot to my students.
