I want to thank you for showing interest in my story. It means a lot that you’re taking time out to read this. In case anyone here doesn’t know me, my name is Flick. I’m a 26 year old non-binary person living in the UK, currently going through the process of getting top surgery.
Top surgery for people who are AFAB (assigned female at birth) is the removal of breast tissue, and the reconstruction of your chest to create a flatter, more ‘masculine’ appearance. The purpose of this surgery is to relieve gender dysphoria. Not all trans/non binary folk require this procedure, but it’s something that I need to improve my quality of life.
Initially I went through my GP, and they placed me on the NHS waiting list. This would mean waiting years before being seen, which is something I could not do. I decided to go private.
My chest has been a source of mental and physical distress for many years. I flatten my chest daily with a special binder, and sometimes tape which damages my skin and gives me blisters. I wear oversized clothing to give the illusion I have a flat chest. I have suffered greatly with my mental health since puberty, as I feel I’m not living life as my authentic self.
My chosen surgeon is Dr Miles Berry, of London Welbeck Hospital. This will cost me £8,000.
I am so grateful for the support I have already received from my friends and family. Any assistance you can provide would be a huge help. I appreciate times are extremely tough, so even a share of this page would be greatly appreciated.
