Kerri & Jr. Torkkeli - Fire Relief

Donation protected
Kerri (Christopher) Torkkeli is a 1994 Graduate from Miramichi Valley High School and a graduate of the University of Maine at Presque Isle. Like many Miramichiers, Kerri has had to move west to pursue her career, and has been living in Fort McMurray in recent years with her young family.

Kerri married Junior Torkkeli in 2011. They have two beautiful boys: their first son Jari, born in April 2012, who is living with Autism, and their second son Kai, born in March 2013.

(The Torkkeli's Gravelstone neighbourhood in Fort McMurray, after the fire)

Kerri was forced to evacuate during the recent Fort McMurray Fire, leaving behind nearly everything, including her family pets.  She and her two young boys fled to the South, while her husband was trapped North of town. Kerri and her boys arrived safely in Edmonton, Alberta at 4:30am

For an agonizing day, Kerri awaited word that her husband was safe and on his way to her and their children. Thankfully Junior was able to make it out of Northern Alberta, and rejoin his family yesterday.

As life-long friends of Kerri’s, we are heartbroken to know that all they worked for is lost, and that their future is uncertain. The current status of their house is unknown but their neighbourhood was devastated, as you can see in the photo. There is a very high likelihood that they lost their house; they have definitely lost their community and their livelihoods. Their life in Fort McMurray has, quite literally, gone up in smoke.

No longer will they watch their kids play in the yard of their house.

No longer will they walk down the familiar streets of Fort McMurray, greeting their neighbours.

No longer will she be able to provide her young sons (including one dealing with Autism) the comfort of a daily routine, familiar surroundings and much loved toys.

All that was known to them, all they had, is lost.

We wish we could be beside our friend right now, rolling up our sleeves to pitch in and help get her family’s life back on track. Unfortunately, the distance doesn’t allow that, but we wanted to do what we could to help her in this time of need. This family has been through a terrible tragedy and they need some of that charitable Maritime spirit to get them back on their feet!

Please help in any way you can.  This GoFundMe campaign has been set up to help the Torkkelis reclaim a portion of what they’ve lost. Please share the link, or better yet, DONATE!

All funds donated will be used for food, lodging, clothing, transportation, toys for Jai and Kari, and any other urgent family needs.

Updates to this family's status will be posted to this page.

From her Miramichi friends and family.
