In September 2015, my family was given devastating news. My mom (Jennifer Elzner) was diagnosed with stage 4 renal failure. Her kidneys were functioning at only 18%. It has been 8 months and the functionality is declining fast; only 10% now.
In order to be put on the transplant list, she needs more than a dozen tests to show she is healthy enough to receive a kidney. She also needs all of her dental work redone since she will be on immunosuppressive drugs for the rest of her life, making any infection or illness deadly. Her out of pocket costs and co-pays are totaling in the thousands.
While waiting for a donor match, she will be on dialysis. She is choosing to do it home because it allows her more freedom, it's more cost effective, and it will allow her to keep her job. In order to do this, she will need to add on to her house so there is room for the machine and supplies. The machine also requires a running water source to operate properly, so the addition will include a 1/2 bath.
My mom has already been through so much. In 2003 she lost a leg due to diabetes. In 2010 she lost a toe. She keeps pushing. You would never know just by looking at her. She always went without so that I had everything I ever wanted and needed. She is the strongest person I know. This time I want to be the strong one for her. Unfortunately, I can't do it by myself. Any help is appreciated more than you could ever know.
