Help Bring the Bieguns Home!
As today marks the 2nd Anniversary of that awful May 3rd that destroyed our beloved little community, we need to remember that there are many of our own community members who are still suffering. There is one family in particular who are still living a nightmare that was caused by that terrible day.
I am asking for help from Fort McMurray and all of Alberta for my dear friend and co-worker Spencer Biegun. Spencer and her husband Jesse lost their home and everything they owned in Abasand along with many others to the Horse River Wildfire in May of 2016.
In November of 2016 they signed a Homebuilders contract with MCG Construction with a promise from their builder that they would be back in their new home by September of 2017. In the mean time they lived in the RV with their two cats and a dog for a year, anxiously waiting for that happy day when they could go home again.
Little did they know their financial nightmare with MCG had just begun leaving them in debt to the amount of approximately $400,000.00 and without a home. Below is rough timeline of what their re-build experience has been like.
-In November $177,000, was paid to MCG Construction.
-In December they reached out MCG to start the plans for their home as no one has contacted them.
-In January they received some basic designs.
-In April The Bieguns emailed MCG about status of permits and were told MCG was working on foundation plans.
-In June the Strongwall product for their house was delivered to Fort McMurray and stored on another property that they were building. The builder then requested a second payment of $176,746.50. This was paid by the Bieguns.
-In September the foundation was poured and basement plumbing was done.
-In November they were contacted by fraud investigation unit through the RCMP. A fraud charge investigation was started through peace officers against MCG Construction.
-In January The Bieguns received notice that MCG was going into bankruptcy protection. This essentially meant that the $354,000 that was already paid to MCG would not be reimbursed to the Bieguns and that MCG would not be completing any further construction on their home.
-In February 2018 they received two liens on our property for $45,000. MCG did not pay contractors. The Bieguns are also responsible for paying these contractors for their completed work.
Spencer and Jesse have also struggled with infertility for many years. With two failed invitro fertilization attempts they decided to adopt a family through Social Services. They could not be more excited to welcome one or two children in need a loving and stable home. Unfortunately, the situation that has occurred with their home has put a hold on the adoption process for their family as well. Before they can welcome any children into their family they are required by Social Services to have a home and they can’t be hopelessly in debt.
Spencer and Jesse have given so much of their hearts to our community. Spencer is the Community Awareness & Special Events Coordinator for Waypoints ( a.k.a Unity House or our local Women’s Shelter). She regularly volunteers for Timeraiser, the Legion, Multi-Cultural Association, Boys and Girls Club, Big Brothers, Big Sisters, Keyano Theater and she sat on the Investment Committee for United Way. Jesse can often be found by her side during all of her volunteer endeavours.
The Bieguns have reached out to their insurance company the Co-Operators who have confirmed that they are not responsible for any of these happenings and therefor; will offer them no further financial assistance. They have also reached out to Red Cross in the past two weeks. Red Cross has said that they are looking into how they can help. Although the Bieguns are extremely grateful for any help the Red Cross can offer, they are aware that the assistance will only cover a small portion of the loss.
This is where you come in Fort McMurray/Alberta. Please help bring this family home by making a small donation. Every little bit helps. If you are not in position to make a donation please share the Go Fund Me page as your contribution. Let’s remind them why Fort McMurray, Alberta is the best place on earth to work, play and raise a family! I thank you in advanced on behalf of Jesse and Spencer Biegun.
