Remembering Leo
Donation protected
Leo Betancourt was a bright, funny 13-year-old with a quick mind and a kind heart. He enjoyed playing basketball, reading, and cheering for the Chicago Bulls. He was beloved by many students, teachers, neighbors, and, of course, his family in Chicago's Back of the Yards neighborhood.
On Monday evening, May 2, Leo was shot and killed while riding in a car only a few blocks from his home and school. His death has shaken our school community. The sadness and emptiness we feel cannot be adequately expressed in words.
As one of Leo's teachers, and on behalf of the rest of our Seward Elementary school family, I am asking for donations to help Leo's family cover expenses for his wake and funeral. The family is struggling just to make ends meet, and the costs of a wake and burial are far beyond their means.
Leo was a beautiful kid who we will never forget. Please help us remember him by donating what you can. His family, and all of us who knew and loved him, thank you for considering.

For more about how Leo's death has impacted his family, school, and community, read Peter Nickeas's piece from the Chicago Tribune: "Slain 13-year-old remembered: 'He was my only friend'"
