Helen Thackston Charter Music Class
Donation protected
My name is Victoria Visceglia, and I am the one of the many teachers new to Helen Thackston Charter School, an urban secondary school in York, PA. A lot has changed for the school this year, including the start of a music program. I currently teach piano, choir, and musical theatre classes. It is a joy to see my students sing, play, and perform, and it is a first for many of them.
I hope to continue growing next year, and we could use any and all supplies. As of right now, we have 18 stools, four pianos, four keyboards with unstable stands, some old glockenspiels, a set of handchimes, an assortment of mismatched unpitched percussion instruments, and elementary music textbooks. I have considered so many possibilities for what else we might purchase: choir music, proper chairs, Orff instruments, guitars, and risers would be fantastic. But for now, I would really like to purchase a few new keyboards and headphone sets. The ones we have currently are old models, and while they work fine, it is difficult to find adapter replacements when those break (which is about once every two months). A few reliable keyboards would make a huge different in our day-to-day music-making, because discovering faulty adapters takes up a lot of instructional time. Volume is also a significant issue; while my students try to practice individually, they are distracted by everyone else in the room. If we reach our goal, my classroom could hold more piano students or allow each student to have his/her own keyboard.
One of our mottos at Helen Thackston is Think Big, Start Small! Donations of any sort are appreciated, because there is much to do in the music realm. My students, my administration, and I would be so thankful for any help we can get!
