For the past several months Dana has been experiencing some health issues. After many doctors’ appointments getting delayed due to Covid, he was finally able to see a doctor and was diagnosed in late April with liver disease. As many of you know, Dana has always been a very healthy person, so this came as a complete shock to everyone.
On May 21st, he was admitted to Alton Memorial Hospital for a small procedure and to monitor his blood levels. Due to the side effects caused by his liver, he has battled for his life since that day and was transferred to Barnes-Jewish Hospital on May 27th. As of July 12th, he has been in the hospital for over 53 days; with 35 days spent in the ICU. He woke up completely on May 30th and was scheduled to be taken off of the ventilator. Unfortunately, he then slipped back into an altered mental state. Since then, he has beat pneumonia and many other infections. He also had a tracheotomy performed, battled seizures, and brain swelling. Currently, he is still unresponsive, in an altered mental state with some extremity movements and eye openings. He has endured so many ups and downs, and although he is still in the hospital, his family hopes to be able to transfer him to a long-term acute care facility. We are praying he will regain his mental status as he goes through the rehabilitation process to become well enough for a chance at a liver transplant. For now, their primary focus is to get him through this acute phase.
