Heartache, Homelessness, and Schizophrenia.

Marquitta Wells grew up in constant uncertainty, surviving homelessness and living with a diagnosis of paranoid schizophrenia. Everyday she has battled to survive on the streets of Chicago and Milwaukee. Marquitta Wells is also my beautiful mom. I watched as her mind began manipulating her into panic and fear, and I was only viewing what world she was trapped in from an outside perspective. When she was no longer capable of taking care of my brother and I, we were both taken away from her and put into foster care for 4 years. She was asked to fix her problems on her own without any resources; she was alone. After she
finally regained custody of us, she lost another battle to her schizophrenia. This spiraled her into the cycle of insecurity again. My brother and I were put into custody of the state and into a group home. Marquitta has been in unstable housing for the entirety of her life. Marquitta has been diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia for the majority of her life. She has had her children torn from her arms time and time again. Pain is a world she knows too well.

I am her son, Isaac Wells. Although we've also been through a lot, my brother and I have been blessed enough to not have had to suffer through all that our mother has been through. I've received scholarships at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, to attend as a mechanical engineering student, and my brother is studying nursing at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Today we're asking for help funding a stable place for our mother. The goal is to raise enough money to buy a small house for her. The money will also go towards food, medication, therapy, and transportation until my brother and I can help her financially after we've secured jobs post graduation.
