Give Children the Gift of Reading

Last year the classroom mission statement my students came up with is simple: "We spread joy through love."  This is who they are and who we work to become every year. They spread joy by teaching and helping each other. They spread joy by showing integrity in difficult situations. They spread joy by noticing the greatness of other students and by encouraging it. They spread joy by persevering through difficult situations. They spread joy by doing community service and raising money for those less fortunate. They are capable of absolutely anything!

One way I get my students get inspired is through books!  Books open a whole new world for them.  They are able to travel to places they have never been.  They are able to walk in the shoes of someone different from them.  They are able to look at a situation from a different point of view.  They are able to go on adventures they never through possible.  

I get to take my students to all of these places.  I have the incredible opportunity to open the door to all of this!  Second grade is a pivital one for reading, as they begin the transition from "learning to read" to "reading to learn." 

This is where I need your help!  I am raising money to order book sets at multiple levels.  This way I will be able to meet readers where they are at and help them learn to comprehend what they are reading.  Having small reading groups helps students engage in what they are reading by discussing it with peers.  I am able to pose high level thinking questions and allow students to share their insigts as they discuss what they read.  Not only this, we will cover different reading strategies each time we meet!  All of this is very hard to do without books!

I have used these book sets in my former classroom and have watched students eyes light up as they become readers or discover something new from a book.  The books are amazing, and they are expensive!  If you can donate to give children the gift of reading, please do so!  Every little bit adds up, even as little as $1!  I promise to use this books to make a difference in the lives of 7 and 8 year olds!
