Ok, so we’ve all seen “Go Fund Me” pages for a variety of causes - from lawyer expenses to vacation getaways. And in my experience the more trivial or ridiculous the cause, the more money gets raised. I’ll be honest, I had a moment of thinking “how can I play up a playful or bizarre spin on my story to entice more people to give?” But the truth is that my need is so meaningful to me that I just can’t bring myself to cheapen it by belittling it to anything less than a ministry opportunity.
I have recently been accepted to Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary to earn my Masters in Biblical Counseling. Like all great adventures this one came upon me with great excitement as well as great fear in the unknown. The biggest unknown being “how am I going to pay for this?”
That’s what this Go Fund Me is for, tuition and school expenses. My $10,000 goal will cover the first year of my two year program which will begin this August.
I know I’m not the only one intimately familiar with student loans and the pain of education expenses, -- because let me tell you, the weight of my existing student loans is a constant companion -- so maybe it seems selfish or silly of me to ask others to shoulder this financial burden with me.
However, this request is no more foreign than asking people to sponsor a mission trip. This degree, this education, will be the foundation of my future ministry and my life-long mission trip. I’m simply extending the invitation for you to join and partner with me at the very beginning of my journey.
Typically a support letter would include a picture of the location, people group, or cute children being helped, and then with that image the need is made real because you can see it. So let me paint you a verbal picture of the people my ministry will touch:
With a degree in Biblical Counseling I will have the opportunity to provide counsel to couples fighting through distress in their marriage, families suffering through the loss of a loved one, teens battling expectations and peer pressure, children dealing with the confusion of living in a broken home, people coping with everyday problems that have been brushed aside as nothing because of how common they are. I will be an advocate for all those who feel silly in their struggles. I will be a listening ear to those taught not to talk. I, God willing, will teach the hopeless to hope again and the hopeful to hope in Christ.
I am humbly asking you all to give as you can, to send me to seminary, so that I can become better equipped to serve as God is leading me.
