My name is Ian Cummings and I am a music teacher at the Eagle Academy for Young Men. The school is located in the Brownsville neighborhood of Brooklyn, (noted by TIME magazine as the neighborhood with the highest concentration of public housing in the nation and one of the most dangerous neighborhoods in New York City). Our school is a public school serving young men of color in grades 6-12.
In the New York City Department of Education, teachers are only provided with an average of $100 in supply money per school year. This funding comes as a reimbursement and requires teachers to spend money out of their own pockets to fulfill their professional responsibilities. Additional funds are available for certain large purposes but these are only able to be used in a specific online portal. This leaves no flexibility for sponsoring guests, funding trips, supporting individual students, or acquiring various supplies and equpiment needed throughout the year.
It is my goal to raise $2000 as a general fund for my new classroom for the 2016-17 school year.
These funds will be used for:
-paying guest artists / musicians to work with our scholar musicians
-purchasing additional supplies for our growing recording and production facilities
-repairing instruments and equipment that invariably requires repair throughout the school year (no specific budger for repairs currently exists in any form)
Creating opportunities to utilize music as a healing and empowering tool drives my daily work. However in communities where the greatest needs exist, there are also the greatest deficits of available resources. This fundraising campaign represents an opportunity to make a significant impact on the success and continuation of the music program at Eagle Academy at Ocean Hill.
Because the funds raised from this campaign will not be utilized in a single purchase or transaction, the impact and effect will be felt throughout the entire school year. Donors contributing to this campaign will have the opportunity to see continued returns on their investment in the form of sustaining a music program throughout the course of a school year.
Myself, my colleagues, and the wonderful students I have the pleasure to work with on a daily basis will be so thankful for any and all contributions you are able to make to this campaign. Thank you!
