On Monday morning, May 2nd 2016 we received a phone call we never imaged would shake our worlds completely & change each and every one of our lives forever. Our friend, son, brother & amazing father to Tye and Cam, Derek Parker, suffered a tragic explosion on KI Sawyer. We cannot thank his friends enough, "his heros" who were nearby the explosion that we know saved his life. All the surrounding Fire Dept, Police Dept & Medical Personnel all arrived and transported him quickly to MGH. We THANK YOU all from the bottom of our hearts & will forever be Thankful for the role you played in his life that day!
Derek was airlifted to U of M in Ann Arbor Burn Center from Marquette,MI and arrived stable shortly after 4:30 pm Monday. He has been gathered by his friends and family providing so much love & support during this difficult time.
Derek has suffered severe burns to his body from the explosion... 44.5% of his body burned,10% of that has resulted in 3rd degree burns. He is highly sedated to help comfort his pain.
His first surgery of many is scheduled for Thursday, May 5th & this surgery will be performed on his hands, inner arm and side of his torso. We all KNOW he's stubborn & STRONG and it's killing him to be laying there. He's been making a lot of progress but we know there will be MANY up and downs in his long road to recovery. His staff here at U of M has been nothing short of Amazing providing great care and controlling his pain and discomfort as much as they can.
During this difficult and painful time for Derek, this will also be a financial burden for himself and his family. He is estimated to be here for 2 months and that will include his surgeries and therapy. The trip here is 9-13 hours for any of his closest family members and travel expenses and hotel stays will quickly begin to add up.
Everyone keeps asking how they can help... The money we raise will help for any medical, personal and travel expenses that will occur.
