My name is Batya.
This plea for financial assistance is to make attendance to farm school in northern California this summer a possibility for myself.
There are many deserving of your assistance, and I think I am deserving because I intend to use skills I gain to include others in this movement. The money I am hoping to raise will cover tuition, room and board, and slight transportation costs. The program starts July 11, and I am hustling hard to raise enough in these next couple of months.
In addition to this fundraising effort, I am reaching out for scholarships and donations through the Grange system, and plan on working under employment during my stay to be able to attend. I am dedicated to making this happen for myself, and any help is vitally appreciated.
The program, called The Grange School of Adapted Agriculture, teaches farming skills as well as functional arts such as welding, business lessons, and home care skills such as electricity and plumbing.
Growing food is a skill I have become increasingly invested in, both for the love and in a more radical way.
In this world of wasteful consumption, it is more important than ever to share farming knowledge and integrate it into daily life. It allows one to become more self-sufficient and creates and maintains community as well as connecting us with the land we live on.
The Grange School is a very unique and wonderful place I very much want to support both in tuition and presence. The program has a female director which is an important element for me. The farming sphere, as most spheres today, is male-dominated, and it is especially important for women to have access to knowledge and resources which can help us remove ourselves from a world which doesn’t support us. Though it is absolutely invaluable for anyone to gain these skills, women teaching women is a rare and important model I would like to see more of and support.
One of my broader goals which the program will help to further is to own land and build a place for community. Group dinners for those who need and want, with events and shows for local music and artists. The element I am most invested in is building a place for children to kick it, learn how to grown food, do art, make clothing, and generally interact with the world in ways they can take ownership of.
On a more personal note, I am emerging from a difficult time in my life, and this program seems to be exactly what I’ve been searching for. I hope to find and present the best of myself after caring for and being cared for by this beautiful space.
