Help for Syrian Refugees in Greece
Hi all!
I'm Sahar Atassi, and I'm a recent graduate from the University of Michigan. I'm a first generation Syrian-American who grew up lucky enough to frequently visit my parent's native land of Syria. My summers there were filled with disfunction, crazy love, and the best food in the entire world. Though I was born and raised in the United States, I always felt strangely at home. It's now my turn to give back to the country and people who always welcomed me with open arms.
In the upcoming few weeks, I will be volunteering in Greece to aid the Syrian refugees. I will be going through the Syrian American Medical Society Global Response (SGR) initiative. The Syrian American Medical Society is a non-profit, non-political educational and humanitarian organization which has provided medical and humanitarian relief inside Syria and in surrounding countries since the start of the conflict. SGR specifically aims to provide medical relief to refugees on the migrant route in Europe. The Macedonian government as well as other governments along the refugee route in Europe have now closed the border and current estimates suggest there are still approximately 13,000 refugees stranded on the border. These will be the refugees for whom we will provide educational, psychological, and medical care.
I'm asking friends, family, and whoever fellow human beings this post reaches to put themselves in a refugee's shoes -- To be stranded with nothing but mouths to feed and a family to support, to be in an unknown land where you are often percevied as the enemy, to lose the dignity all humans should be guaranteed. I am reaching out for contributions. Any amount would be so appreciated, and there is no such thing as too little.
If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me.
With lots of love,
Sahar
