The Figone family needs our help! Let’s bring this community together for a local family in need.

Sydney and Greg Figone have gone through more in their relationship than most people will go through in a lifetime. A few years ago, Sydney beat a very rare type of Hodgkin’s Lymphoma that should have taken her life on more than one occasion. Greg remained her rock throughout her treatments, and as soon as she won her battle with cancer and she regained her health, they
were happily married. They were living their very own fairytale.

Sydney was told by her doctors that she had to wait a few years before attempting to have a baby and that the chances of her becoming a mother was very slim due to the damage done to her body by her cancer treatments. The doctors gave she and Greg the go ahead to try, although they knew there was little hope.

In December 2015, their dream came true Sydney found out she was pregnant with not only with one baby but with twins! This news was met with much joy but also with fear. Due to her cancer history, as well as the fact this was twin pregnancy, this pregnancy was considered very high risk. At one point in the earlier stages of pregnancy, Sydney and Greg were scared when they were told they were most likely miscarrying the babies. The twins did not agree and they made it through the first trimester.

Their pregnancy worries started to lessen as the twins got bigger and stronger in the  2nd trimester. They told their many loved ones the good news and everyone was
thrilled. In March, they found out that their precious babies were a Baby Boy and a Baby Girl and things were perfect.

The joy was short-lived however when on April 7, Sydney went to the hospital because she had been having some mild contractions. Arriving at Mercy Medical Center, she hoped she was going to be told she was just an overzealous 1st time Mom but that was not the case. Sydney was in active labor and dilated to 6cm. The babies were only at 22 weeks gestation and they had to stop labor. The medical staff and Sydney had one goal - keep those babies in until at least 24 weeks, which in the medical community is considered the age of viability.

After an incredibly difficult week, Greg and Sydney got their first bit of good news in a while, a miracle…the babies were measuring larger than expected. Instead of 23 weeks, the babies were measuring 23 weeks and 5 days. They could not wait any longer and just after midnight on April 17, the twins entered the world. Born at 23 weeks 3 days gestation, Savannah Figone weighed 1 lb 5 oz and Bennett Figone weighed 1 lb 4oz.

Six hours after the birth, the babies made separate flights by plane to UC Davis. On the second night, Bennett had a liver rupture and Greg and Sydney were told he would not make it through the night. But he held on. These babies are fighters, just like their mother. If everything continues to go as planned, they will be in the NICU for four months. Currently the twins are doing as well as can be expected although there are ups and downs every day.

They have received multiple blood product transfusions and the medical staff is doing everything in their power to help them develop in this harsh new world when they should have developed in the warmth of their mommy’s belly. The greatest comfort as of now that they receive is the skin on skin they get in the NICU being held by their mama. The Figones have a very long road ahead of them.

Right now the Figones need to be focusing on what’s important and that is the health and happiness of their new family. My hope is that, as a community, we can come together to help alleviate some of their stresses when it come to the financial side of their struggle.

We will be having a Dine and Donate Fundraiser at Mary’s Pizza Shack at both the Redding and Anderson locations where a portion of your check will go to benefit the Figone family. At the Anderson location we will have an additional fundraiser where 100% of the funds will go to support the Figone family.
