Our sweet family member Danae fell severely ill seven months ago on Christmas Day. She was misdiagnosed originally and finally got the correct diagnoses of NMO, (Neuromyelitis Optica). It is a heterogeneous condition consisting of the inflammation and demyelination of the optic nerve (optic neuritis) and the spinal cord (myelitis). It is an autoimmune disease that is very rare with approximately 4,000 cases in the United States. The spinal cord lesions lead to varying degrees of weakness and/or paralysis in the legs or arms, loss of sensation (including blindness) and/or bladder and bowel dysfunction. Our prayers and hopes are that she heals to the very best possible with the help of professionals, medicine, support, rehabilitation and a whole lot of love. Danae has spent the past 6 weeks alone in a hospital (due to Covid-19 regulations) fighting the hardest fight of her life. Her and Bill have 5 wonderful children at home who continue to have hope that the doctors find relief and answers and can begin to pause the lesions and painful attacks on her body. Danae, Bill and children have been climbing this mountain for the past 7 months with their continued smiles, positive attitudes and Danae’s infectious laugh. It is heartbreaking to see our once aerobic teaching, mile running, cupcake making, sideline fan lay in a hospital bed in pain while her body is fighting against itself. The lifetime medical expenses that come with this rare disease are heavy. We are very aware that many in this world are struggling today with what is going on and we have no expectations nor want anyone to feel obligated but are in hope that any little bit raised may help them. We love you Banks Family!
