On the early evening of June 16, 2020, my mom Lisa was carelessly struck by a vehicle while on her motorcycle. The car in question was travelling over 180 km/h, and attempted to pass a slow moving vehicle going around a curve, heading uphill. The car crossed the yellow line, hit the slow moving vehicle, and bounced into my mom, severing her leg on the side of the road. Due to her fast thinking and quick assessment of the situation, she was able to get herself out from under her bike, call for someone to call 911, and got a tourniquet on her leg, which likely saved her life. She was airlifted to Hamilton General, where she underwent surgery to attempt to reattach her leg, which was unsuccessful. She has been left with the loss of her left leg from below the knee, which will drastically change her life. Lisa is an incredibly beautiful person. She looks for the best in everyone, and cares deeply for anyone she comes into contact with, including the man that hit her. She has always loved to dance, and I have lost count of the number of concerts we have gone to together, not to mention the Motley Crue/Def Leppard concert we have tickets to for next year! We are sincerely hoping she can be up, dancing with us when we go next summer, just like she would have if this hadn’t happened! Lisa is a loving partner to her girlfriend Sue, a lung cancer survivor, a caring mother to me, and my brother Brandon, and a devoted grandmother to her 2 grandsons, aged 5 and 8, not to mention what she means to her many friends. She has lost the ability to do groceries for her family, which was her responsibility as Sue is high risk, the ability to walk her dogs (she has 2), keep up with her grandsons (2 boys FULL of energy!!!), her ability to work, and so much more that we haven’t even considered yet. She will be attending an out of town rehabilitation program, and will need to be transferred to and from it, as well as requiring modifications to her house in order to come home. Above everything, we are SO thankful that we still have her here, and we are doing our best to prepare for the long months of recovery ahead. We are aware that there will be a lot to do, but we are optimistic that she will heal, and continue to be my fun-loving, always smiling, randomly breaking into dance, loving everyone, and sometimes embarrassing, mother!!”
