Family attacked and wrongfully arrested at Protest

Donation protected

While visiting Fort Wayne, Indiana from Raleigh, NC for a funeral, Jamison Chapman, his wife and their dog were driving down Berry street downtown when they were blocked by protesters crowding the street.

Once they made it to the intersection of Berry and Clinton street, the FWPD and SWAT blocked the intersection to prevent anyone from crossing. They sat in the car windows rolled up and waited to be able to continue driving. Police then shot tear gas at their car. Jamison, his wife and their dog could not breathe, so they were forced to exit the vehicle. A man was in front of the car being sprayed directly in the face at close range with pepper spray by an officer and was in obvious distress, being unable to breathe. Jamison was concerned for the citizen and he walked to the man and helped escort him away from the Police, helping him wash the pepper spray away from his eyes. As he was helping the man, police then shot more tear gas. Jamison was then assaulted by 3 officers and taken away while his wife was left on the sidewalk screaming for her husband's release.

Fort Wayne news featured images of this arrest in a prominent news story concerning the possibility of spreading Covid 19 due to the protests.
The reality is that Jamison broke no laws, and was not an active part of the protests at all, but was arrested and taken to the Allen County Jail regardless.

His wife was notified multiple times by inmates in the jail saying her husband was beaten and taken to the hospital. She found out he was left on a jail cell floor after having his head run into a door while handcuffed, and then was kicked over and over by Allen County Jail staff.
Jamison suffered two seizures while being detained, as he has a history of epilepsy, and his wife was not notified by Allen County Jail staff.
During his time incarcerated at Allen County Jail, Jamison was admitted to Lutheran Hospital for a head injury and then to St Joe Hospital for his seizures. Both times, hospital attendees were told to not contact Jamison's emergency contact, as he was declared a flight risk by the Allen County Police, and that the officers felt that he may try to reach his wife in an attempt to escape custody.
Jamison's family now has no employment, as both he and his wife have lost their jobs, being unable to return to North Carolina until a future court date. Jamison is the owner of Jay's Jerk in Raleigh, NC. and his wife Latina Evans has been a nail tech for 12 years, and now are both out of work.
Any donated funds will go directly towards any legal, transportation, food and lodging for his family while they are forced to stay in Indiana until his future court date. Many thanks to those who have heard our story and can be supportive during this time.
