My dad and what his work did to him
Donation protected
Hello, my name is Mark and I am creating this account for my father. My father worked 2 jobs all his life to help support our family to try and give each of my siblings and I, a normal life and to give us every opportunity. He missed many events growing up, but came to every sporting event or school function that he could. My dad made many sacrifices for us and he was well on his way to retiring and proving to us that being kind and working hard works. He always taught us to never quit and to go as far as you can in life. Unfortunately, my dad suffered many injuries from his physical job at Fedex. He has continued to battle through Leukemia, stents in his heart and neck injuries.
His job at Fedex requires him to lift and push heavy equipment. One day during work he had a heavy box fall on his head which caused him to be out of work. Once he finally recovered from surgeries and therapy he tried to come back to work at Fedex, the company he has been employed at for 18+ years. Fedex decided not to bring him back due to his injuries and restrictions from his doctor.
Since Fedex refused to bring him back, it forced my dad to try and find a job so he could support his 4 kids and wife. Unfortunately, being middle aged and a person with a disability there was not much out there. So, my dad decided to try and hold Fedex accountable. Unfortunately, he found out that it was going to cost a lot of money to peruse legal actions and he didn’t have the resources to make this happen. So, after all of this he decided that he was going to try and fight this on his own. He researched and studied the law on disability and age discrimination. This has been a 5+ year process for my dad, the mental stress from losing his job and not being able to provide for his family caused him to go into serious depression. My dad currently sees a psychiatrist for depression and anxiety.
My dad never mentioned how much he lost in salary and pensions over the past 5 years, but we see the burden he holds in everyday life because of the loss of his job. The EEOC was in favor for my dad that he was discriminated against which allowed him to enter into a lawsuit. Once my dad went into mediation for his lawsuit, after not working for the last 5 years due to his disability, FedEx thought a fair compensation for his losses was worth $1,500. Unfortunately, this number was nowhere near what he lost and Fedex refused to move from where they stand. This loss cost my dad years in benefits and pension that he will not recover from. So, I am creating this GoFundMe to try to show him there are good people out there and that being kind and working hard does work.
