We’re hoping to raise £1,500 to support various projects at The Mendip School

Both of us are in the same position being that both of our sons have been diagnosed with Autistic Spectrum Disorders (ASD), fortunately enough our sons have been accepted in ‘The Mendip School’ and will be provided the sufficient support throughout their full-time education.

It has been brought to our attention that the school are raising funds for various projects and therefore we could not think of a better cause to support. We have decided to take part in multiple obstacle course races, ranging from 5k (Wolf Run) to a 15k (Tough Mudder) and our latest challenge being the (BEAST) 21K Spartan. After accomplishing both the 5K Wolf Run and the 15K Tough Mudder, what better to do than step it up a notch and attempt the (BEAST) 21K Spartan. We hope everyone will support us with raising money for such a good cause.

Below is some information about the school and the project we intend to raise funds for.

The Mendip School was built in 2015, the site was designed for a capacity of 120 pupils. We have now grown to 144 pupils with potential for this to extend to 158 pupils if necessary. All classrooms are in use and during the pandemic the need for break out and small spaces for pupils has become increasingly important.

The school caters for children from 4 through to 19 with a diagnosis of Autistic Spectrum Disorders (ASD) and Speech Language and Communication Needs (SLCN). The Mendip School is part of The Partnership Trust, who opened the school in 2015. The school started in a temporary building on the site of Fosse Way school with 18 pupils and 11 staff.

In 2019 we converted the science room and the music room into class spaces to accommodate and additional class and a small nurture-based group of pupils. This is unsustainable as our music therapist requires a quiet, safe space to support pupils and we need to be able to find space to accommodate these pupils elsewhere.

Due to the rapid growth and the placement of consultations our Secondary classes have over 90 pupils in for the next academic year. There are 6 class spaces with a design capacity of 12 pupils in each class. We are due to exceed this and have no additional specialist rooms to use as break out/ class or groups spaces. The 4 or 5 defined pods will enable each classroom to have a group room to use to support learners in need of quiet/calm spaces to learn.
