Wilson's Image College Scholarship

My name is Teto Wilson, I'm a North Minneapolis Businessman whose owned Wilson's Image Barbers and Stylists for 13 years. Living & working in North Minneapolis has allowed me to see & experience the despair, hope and resolute of the residents as well as the promises & failures of those elected to make all of Minneapolis a thriving city. Amongst many other important measures, Minnesota has the widest educational achievement gaps in the nation between White and Black students. The education system here is failing our black & brown students. I decided to get involved to help spur a positive change. In 2016 Minneapolis Public Schools was going through the process of hiring a new Superintendent. With the demands of the NAACP and residents of the city, the Minneapolis School Board set up a committee of community residents to help select the new superintendent. I was selected to serve on that committee. We elected our current Ed Graff our current Superintendent. Watching how things were going in education after this selection, I still felt that I needed to do more, so in May of 2018 I started the Wilson's Image College Scholarship. This scholarship was set up for African American scholars living in North Minneapolis intentionally because that's where the schools are failing black & brown scholars the most. To recieve the scholarship, scholars needed to write an essay detailing how they would use their degree to positively impact the social/economic ills & people of North Minneapolis. The initial goal of the scholarship was to give 2 scholars, male & female $500 each. The buzz got around about it & donations started pouring in. We gave 5 scholars $1k each in the 2018 followed up by giving 2 scholars $1k each in 2019. The reason I'm starting this GoFundMe is because my ultimate goal along with giving our scholars hope & helping to fulfill their educational goals, I want to not only give $1k scholarships, but to have 2 scholars education completely paid for annually. If you believe in the hope, are tired of the despair & want to strengthen the resolute of the residents of North Minneapolis, then you must know its starts with education. Help me help our scholars make a difference. Thank you!
