Hello, my name is Ameze-Rosa and I am a Housing Stability Community Advocate serving the vulnerable unhoused community of Arizona. In late May 2025, my son complained of a pain in his left leg; he thought he pulled his muscle at the gym or playing basketball. After multiple hospital visits thinking this was a simple sprain, his condition worsened. On July 27th, 2025, I took him into the emergency room and my 20-year-old healthy, athletic son Khaseam was then hospitalized due to the inability to walk. Soon after that, his speech became slurred and he developed double vision and shortness of breath; he spent 30 days in the hospital, then 2 weeks in a physical rehabilitation hospital. After a spinal fluid test, the doctors at Banner Hospital discovered his diagnosis may be a condition called Miller Fisher Syndrome/Guillain-Barre Syndrome.

He is now home and undergoing wellness treatments to recover such as physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, acupuncture, and he is now under the care of a naturopath doctor. We are unsure of his recovery time as it is now 4 1/2 months later and he is unable to walk, talk clearly, and he continues to suffer from double vision. A few weeks ago, he began to have waves of dizziness whenever he moves his head. With the constant care and attention of Khaseam’s doctors, we remain hopeful.

Before this happened, Khaseam was a healthy and productive 20-year-old kid with a future ahead of him with hopes of going to ASU and playing football.

Khaseam and I are grateful for anything that can be contributed to the cost of his acupuncture treatments, alternative therapies, cost of a very strict anti-inflammatory diet, supplements, and Khaseam’s expenses that he has had to abandon due to his illness.

As I remain on family medical leave until Jan 2026, I am unsure of the recovery journey that lies ahead for my son. Our days are spent at neurology appointments, testing appointments, lab appointments, acupuncture, physical therapy appointments, and naturopath appointments.

I am committed to a continued healing environment for Khaseam. Khaseam has the emotional support of his twin brother and his two young adult sisters, but I see the sadness in their faces when they see their brother in this condition.
