Shaolin Self Defense Centers has been serving the Long Island community since the year 1984. 7th degree black belt, Master Steven Castelli has owned the school since 2005. Master Steve is well known throughout the Long Island community for the hard work he puts into every individual student. It doesn’t matter wether the student is young or old, has a learning disability or a physical disability. If they have been a lifelong student or a first time student. Master Steve is more then willing to go above and beyond what a typical karate instructor dose. He is one of those people that will take the shirt off his back to keep you warm during a blizzard. I personally have first-hand experience with this, teaching and learning with him for the last ten years. During this time I do not just see him as my boss or master, I grown to consider him family. These times are hard for all dojo owners over Long Island. But Master Steve doesn’t know the meaning of the word “give up”. Master Steve will never give up on his dojo, But more importantly he would never give up on his students. He has inspired his students to keep training via zoom classes and private lessons. Some would believe that online lesson are easier than teaching in person, but that couldn’t be farther from the truth. Master Steve starts his day at 9 AM with classes and privates and ends at 9 PM Monday through Sunday. During these times Master Steve tells his student “lets make a negative into a positive”. And with every class he teaches he really does make this negative situation a little more positive. Master Steve has impacted so many our lives in so many different ways throughout the years. You can ask anyone he has ever trained, everyone has a couple of really great stories about what a great teacher he is but more importantly what a great person he is. Master Steve has always been there for us in our time of need, so in these crazy and uncertain times it is our turn to be there for him! Any amount of money no matter how big or small will be a huge help!
