Surfer Dude, the orphan wild Stallion, was found on Saturday evening with what we believe appeared to be a gunshot wound or potentially a bad puncture wound in his right front leg (we won’t know until the vet does his surgery). I adopted Surfer through the Elder of the tribe land Surfer lived on in the wild. I hoped to get him off the range many times as he had been kicked out of his band and left solo as a very young horse for over a year. With no other horses within many many ranges, there was pretty much no chance Surfer would ever find other bachelors or mares to start his own family. So I did my research and talked to the tribe Elder and a Wild Horse Rescue Group who understood the situation and was happy to let me give him the life he deserves with my other horses on a huge, beautiful, lush green pasture with a beautiful mountain creek flowing all year round. This horse needed to be saved, he was destined for a sad, lonely and dangerous life.
When I went to visit him on the 9th of May in the evening just to do his daily checkup. I noticed his right front leg was completely limp. It was a devastating moment. I tried to get a rescue out but because of Surfer Dudes location there was no way we could get a trailer back into the mountains where he was. So I had no choice but to leave him for the night and planned the rescue for the following morning when we had more daylight as it was getting dark.
Sunday morning he was no where to be seen. I was just heartbroken, thinking he may have layed down somewhere not being able to get up and dying a painful death alone. However, we did not give up. My self and a few good friends searched Sunday and Monday long and hard ALL day. Still, no sign of my little dude. We were all starting to lose all hope. Time was critical for him. He had no way of defending himself in his condition.
Tuesday we were all pretty much starting to completely lose all hope. My good friend who loves Surfer also, decided he just had to check one more time while I had to go to work. It was a miracle. I got the call. I burst into tears of joy for the first time in my life. My little miracle mustang was alive and standing but still having a very hard time moving around. His leg had not progressed. He had made his way at least 5 miles down the mountain where we could get a trailer close enough.
There were some amazing volunteers drop everything they were doing and come to Surfers rescue. We had the amazing large animal rescue group and a few amazing cowboys come to help get him to safety. They did an amazing job and were so kind and gentle with him. They moved him down the road about a mile to where we could park the trailers and load him up. It went perfectly, it was just meant to be.
Surfer Dude is now safe and sound, doing a little better but still is going to require quite a bit of medical attention and lots of care to get him back to health. If you want to help Surfer please consider donating to his medical and TLC. ANYTHING helps. I understand times are tough, so even $5 helps ❤️ Thank you ALL who have been so worried about this beautiful, amazing little stallion. All of your love and prayers have helped him through this.
