The Story Behind YYC Care Packages

Hi, I’m Judy — and for as long as I can remember, my heart has gone out to those experiencing homelessness. I used to keep small “care packages” in my car so I could offer essentials to anyone in need. But around Christmas in 2018, I began to wonder… was I really making a difference?

That question changed everything.

One week later, during our Christmas gift exchange, my friend Julia Fraser handed me a card with $50 inside and a note encouraging me to continue my care package idea. That small, heartfelt gesture sparked something big. I reached out to friends and family, asking if they’d like to help — and within a week, we raised $930.

We spent days hunting for deals, filling carts at Dollarama, and turning my home into a little workshop of love. Together, we assembled 96 care packages , filled with essentials and hope, and delivered them to the Calgary Drop-In Centre.

That first year started a movement.

Since 2018, this project has grown into an annual tradition — one that continues to unite our community in compassion. Each year, we’ve expanded our reach, refined what goes into the packages, and inspired more people to get involved. To date, we’ve raised $38,754 and created 2,199 care packages for those who need them most.

This Christmas, I invite you to imagine what it’s like to be without a warm home or a family to celebrate with — and then to receive a care package filled with essentials, a handwritten message, and a reminder that you’re not forgotten.
