On September 24, 2018, the Steinberg family welcomed their first child, a beautiful baby girl, Cameron Morgan Steinberg. Cameron was born with a severe, congenital heart defect called Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS). Essentially, Cameron was born with half of a heart and would have needed a series of open-heart surgeries as a baby to survive.
Unfortunately, Cameron’s lungs were too sick for the necessary heart surgeries, and she lost her battle with HLHS on November 23, 2018. The Steinberg family now has two children who attend Barrington School and we hold their family dear in our hearts. They have made such a wonderful impact on our teachers, staff and the friends they've made along the way.
The money raised from this year's Dance-a-thon will go directly to the Cameron Steinberg Foundation to help fund research in hopes of finding cures and treatments for Congenital Heart Defects, including Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS).
In the United States, congenital heart defects are approximately 60 times more prevalent than childhood cancer (CHOP). Twice as many children die from congenital heart defects each year than from all forms of childhood cancer combined, yet funding for pediatric cancer research is five times higher (American Heart Association). The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates about 1 out of every 4,000 babies born in the United States each year is born with HLHS. In honor of Cameron and all other families that have lived through this pain, we want to increase awareness for all congenital heart defects and raise enough money to make a difference for HLHS patients.
Thank you so much for joining us in lending a hand to this cause. Together, we can make a difference!
