Ever since I was young, I have watched the Olympics, first with my family, then at every opportunity as an adult. As a child, I could sense that nervous anticipation of the athletes preparing to compete, their hopefulness for a successful event, and the pride of the victors as their national anthem played and the flag was raised. My heart would swell with pride when an American would win, and an instinctual yearning to have that moment of pride for our country would wash over me.
I was never particularly athletic, making any serious dreams of representing my country at an international level of sports laughable. Then I discovered combined driving. The day I stepped onto the back of a marathon carriage for the first time, I set a goal that one day I would represent the United States at the world level.
That day is coming soon. Travis and I, along with our amazing equine partner- Gellerduht ("Gus"), have been named to Team USA to compete at the World Championships in Le Pin-au-Haras, France!
On approximately August 23rd, Gus and our equipment will fly from JKF to Liege, Belgium. Once there, we will train and make final preparations in Belgium over the next three weeks before traveling to France for the World Championships September 14th-18th. We have made frugal but effective choices to make the trip as economical as possible. Even with those frugalities, the total budget is over $50,000.
