The Moose fire was detected on July 17, 2022 and burned in excess of 100 days.

On July 21, a CH-47 Chinook Helicopter working along the Salmon River near Indianola experienced a hard landing which resulted in the loss of the lives of both pilots, Tommy Hayes and Jared Bird.

Employees of the Salmon-Challis National Forest are raising money for a reflection site near the accident location. The site will include two benches and a table honoring the pilots in a location where visitors can reflect on the lives and service of the pilots and all other responders who have lost their lives during wildland fire operations.

Any additional funds above the cost of fabrication and installation of the reflection site will be donated to the Wildland Firefighter Foundation.

Luke Livingston will handle the funds raised for the reflection benches. As the beneficiary of this fundraiser, he will oversee their use for fabricating and installing the benches. Any excess funds raised will be donated to the Wildland Firefighter Foundation.
