Each summer, for eight (8) Wednesday evenings Christ Presbyterian Church in The Hill rolls out a grill and cooks hot dogs and hamburgers and prepares a meal for those who gather at Trowbridge Square Park in the Hill (New Haven, CT). The good people of CPC in The Hill bring dishes, fruits, salads, and some desserts. We offer a small feast to whomever happens to be in the park that evening. And for some, it will be their only meal for the day.
This is no ordinary time. And despite the COVID-19 health and safety protocols, we will still serve our neighbors. No matter the weather each Wednesday evening, CPC in The Hill will feed and preach and love on our Hill neighbors this summer––and we are counting on you to help make this happen.
The good people of the park come, many just to spend time with their kids, single moms giving their children some end-of-the-day energy release, neighbors hanging out, plenty of un-parented teens, and the homeless, the addicted, and even some gang members––they are all invited to join us for a short message–and they do come to hear the Word even though they know they'd still be able to eat if they wait for 10 minutes. Yet, they are eager to listen to the Word.
Last year, because of COVID-19, it was a little different; yet, still, we averaged easily over 75 people and on the last day over 90. We anticipate more will gather this year to listen, pray, and, then, eat.
These eight (8) evenings are our church’s signature ministry. Yet, we need some help to cover the costs for this ministry. It is outside our regular church budget. So we fundraise specifically for the summer Park BBQ ministry. We need weekly supplies, some new coolers, a new canopy, gas for the grill, and of course the hot dogs and hamburgers (and some other basic food items). We will also need weekly supplies, some outreach items, and school supplies (which we will away on the last evening) for the growing crowd who join us each Wednesday.
The park ministry costs about $230 a week. Add the supplies et al., and we will need $2,200 for FY21’s summer Park ministry.
It is amazing we can feed so many people for about $3.00 a meal.
