Brett’s Battle

Donation protected
On December 27, Brett’s world was turned upside down. He was taken to the University of Alberta hospital and within 24 hours it was determined he had a critical bacterial infection that had taken hold of his body and targeted his heart. He was rushed into surgery to repair the damage the infection had already begun to do. Brett had an aortic valve replaced in his heart and fluid drained from around one lung. Following surgery we were optimistic for a difficult, but full, recovery. That all changed when the fever returned and the infection came back. An amazing team of doctors struggled to find the medication that would conquer his blood infection. A brain bleed led Brett to extensive surgery to alleviate the clot and pressure that was being put on his brain. To help with recovery and healing process, Brett was put into an induced coma. It has been an incredibly hard uphill battle for him, but he is showing signs of healing and recovery; responding to communication with hand squeezes and some eye movements. His bride, Christina, and parents, Tracy and Karen, as well as many family and friends have been praying hard for a miracle. Thankfully his new medication seems to be working! As many questions remain unanswered, what we do know is that Brett’s recovery will include extensive rehabilitation to do many of the things that we take for granted each day. This is a humble request to help Brett on the long road ahead and his family to focus on him, without the financial burden that goes along with something so unexpected and tragic. All donations will go directly to Brett’s therapy and expenses, as well as any bills and costs incurred over the next few months, with the goal of helping his family remain close to him during this time. His parents, Tracy and Karen, have been named the beneficiaries said funds. If any funds remain unused, they will be donated to the Heart and Stroke Foundation. We are confident that Brett will navigate his way through this with the drive and determination he has approached everything in his life. With the arrival of their new baby in May, Brett has a lot to fight for and is so excited to meet her. With love and respect. On behalf of Brett, Christina, Jude, Tracy and Karen and all of us Thank you.
