2020-2021 Ski Racing Fund

My name is Zuri McLoughlin, I am a ski racer, I am 15 years old; strong, willing, capable and independent. I’ve won, I’ve crashed, I’ve been on the podium, and I’ve been disqualified but I always give it my all.  I am asking for your financial support this ski season for equipment, training, competitions and travel.

I have grown up with ski boots and skis on my feet. The first time I went out to ski, I was only one year old.  At the age of 5 I had my first 100-day season. When I was 8, my family and I moved up to Alta and we then had very easy and regular access to the mountain, as the base of the Collins Lift was now at our back door...literally.   My parents have been ski instructors at Alta Ski Area my whole life so I have been lucky enough to grow up skiing Alta.

I try to be very coachable and learn quickly by hearing what my coaches say and then breaking it down into smaller steps that I can more easily understand. This all pays off and it was proven at Western Regionals in Big Sky two seasons ago. I placed 5th in a very tight SkillsQuest Competition. SkillsQuest is a competition completely based on an athlete's skillfulness. The top 60 girls in the Western Region competed, so I felt that this was a pretty big accomplishment for me.

My coaches and teachers have regularly commented on my ability to self-start and accomplish goals and assignments quickly. They recognize me for encouraging others and for my positive attitude, as well as rewarding me for my ability to complete work quickly, effectively, and of high quality.

I am not only a focused ski racer, I also have solid academics, I have been in the ‘advanced math’ classes every year and got an A in high school math as an eighth grader. I have always been on either honor roll or high honor roll and my middle school team gave me multiple awards for my academic achievements. Alongside all of that, in sixth grade I participated in my schools spelling bee and our team won when we competed against all the schools in the county.

I dedicate so much time to ski racing, but still need to focus on my academics. This winter I am doing my first full year of online school, last year I did a Personalized Learning Plan for three quarters of the year and I was really able to excel with that. People often recognize me as a very independent person. I am able to set goals and focus points on my own and reach out for assistance when needed. When I complete my school work for the day, I put my ski stuff  on and go outside to improve something that day. Even if it is something very small, I make sure I accomplish at least one thing.

I work as hard as I can every day, whether it's working to get stronger, working on my skiing skills or preparing for a math test. I am willing to get things done at a high quality even if it takes time and may involve me changing my daily schedule to make it happen. Every single day I strive to be the best I can possibly be.

Thank you for any support you can offer, I really appreciate it.
