Mon nom est Catherine Gauthier, queer barista de 23 ans à Montréal. J'ai commencé dans l'industrie du café de spécialité il y a environ 4 ans et depuis, je n'ai jamais eu envie de faire autre chose. Le café est devenue une passion et ma carrière et depuis, j'ai voyagé, j'ai pris des formations un peu partout aux États-Unis et en Europe, je souhaite évolué dans cette industrie et je travaille très fort pour aller chercher de l'éducation.

Il y a deux ans, j'ai assisté à mes premières compétitions barista: j'étais bénévoles pour la Speciality coffee association expo à Seattle et j'ai tout de suite eu le déclic. Je me voyais être sur la scène et moi-même faire partie de cette excitante compétition.
Les baristas championship consistent à présenter trois services: un service espresso, un service breuvage lait et un breuvage signature. Pour 4 juges sensorielles. Il y a aussi deux juges techniques et un juge en chef. Le but est de décrire le (les) café(s) choisi(s), de raconter une histoire et d'offrir un service impeccable aux juges.

J'ai eu la chance de participé pour la première fois en 2019 aux nationaux canadiens. Pour l'année 2020, j'ai pris part aux régionaux qui avaient lieu du 8 au 10 septembre dernier. Grâce à ma 6e place, je bouge donc à la prochaine étape: Les nationaux canadiens 2020 qui auront lieu  mars 2020. 
Je travaille comme barista et je m'entraine pour cette compétition à temps plein, je mets énormément d'énergie dans ma réussite. Je souhaite faire le top 6 canadien cette année, me rapprocher de mon rêve d'un jour représenter le Canada aux World barista championship, pour cette année, je souhaite mettre le plus de travail dans ma préparation et réussir à faire venir ma coach avec moi dans ce voyage. Je n'ai pas accès à un coach à Montréal et je travaille avec une ancienne compétitrice qui vit à Hamilton. Elle m'aide énormément dans mon cheminement même si nous ne vivons pas dans la même ville. J'aimerais réussir à payer ses frais de déplacement pour qu'elle soit à mes cotés durant le championnat. Elle est une partie très importante de mon équipe et grâce à elle, j'ai une personne d'expérience dans mon équipe.

Cette compétition représente un rêve pour moi, un accomplissement incroyable et je souhaite offrir le meilleur de moi sur ce stage. Avec votre participation, j'atteindrai plus facilement cet objectif et j'en serai énormément reconnaissante. L'argent que j'amasserai m'aidera à payer les frais de voyage de ma coach, l'achat d'un café de compétition et me donner accès à de l'équipement spécialiser.

my name is Catherine Gauthier, a queer barista working in Montreal. I am 23 years old and I’ve been working in the speciality coffee industry for about 4 years. I fall in love when coffee and I never stop doing it since I’ve started. It became my passion and I could see myself doing this in 10 years.

the first time I attempted a coffee event was 3 years ago at the SCA expo in Seattle. I was volunteering back stage for the US barista championships, and at that moment I told myself: « I want to do the same ». I’ve dreamed of being on the barista championship stage for so long and last year, I made it happened. In 2019, I went to Toronto to be part of the Canadian Barista Championship where I finished 13th.

On September 10th, I took part in the qualifiers in the East coast where I finished 6th, meaning that I am moving to the next step: the 2020 Canadian Barista Championship. I will, with my team, be part of this exciting adventures. My coach, who is living in Hamilton, is an inspiration and she is offering me so much during this process. My goal here would be to be able to pay for her trip (the nationals would probably be in the BC in March 2020). I want to make sure I’ll be able to have my coach on my side during this event. I don’t have access to a coach in Montreal, not a lot of people has competed and I wanted a coach that I can trust and relied to. She is a strong and wonderful woman and with her, we make a dream team.

Coffee is where I feel like myself, where I feel strong and talented. I traveled a lot in Europe and USA to participate in this beautiful industry. I have to look for education by myself since it’s not a usual job and we can’t learn about speciality in school. I want this industry to grow and I wish to go forward with it.

Competing is a dream for me and I could see myself representing Canada, as the first queer person on the world stage of the Barista Championship.
