Hello! We are a group of students from the University of Puerto Rico at Mayaguez who are looking forward to participate in the ASCE Regional Concrete Canoe Competition, which will be held on March 16, 17 and 18 at Florida.
The Concrete Canoe is one of the main competitions hosted by the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) in which its student’s chapters of almost 200 nationwide and international universities participate every year. It consists of designing, constructing and paddling a canoe made of concrete. This large scale project is very complex, giving the students the opportunity to apply concepts learned in class while developing their leadership, creativity, problem-solving and team-working skills. These skills, in addition to the hard work and long hours that are put into this project, are fundamental to accomplish the desired results. The project also helps promote a physically active lifestyle in order to achieve the desired results in the paddling competition.
For years, civil engineering students from the University of Puerto Rico at Mayaguez have represented the institution and our island in the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Student Conference. This year was not the exception and last March the student chapter of our University competed against 28 universities in the Southeast Region achieving the First Place Overall. Among the competitions we participated in, the Concrete Canoe Team achieved Second Place Overall and received the invitation to the National Competition. A total of seven awards were obtained in the Regional Competitions: First Place in Men’s Sprint and Women’s Sprint; Second Place in Men’s Endurance and Women’s Endurance; Third Place in Oral Presentation; First Place in Design Paper; and as mentioned before, Second Place Overall. In the National Competition, the team achieved seventh place, obtaining award: Third Place in Coed Race; Fourth Place in Men’s Sprint; Fifth Place in Men’s Endurance and Fifth Place in Design Paper. Team effort, dedication and perseverance was key to achieve the initial goal of representing the University and placing as one of the top universities of the region. Our team was recognized throughout our island mainly due to exposition in the written and televised media.
The objective of the Concrete Canoe Competition is to design and construct a lightweight concrete canoe which must be paddled in five races. The famous competition requires the application of technical knowledge, structural analysis, construction, concrete mix design and project management acquired in university courses in addition to a good physical condition. All while developing leadership, teamwork and construction management skills.
