I am running the 2017 Virgin London Marathon in aid of the National Deaf Children's Society (NDCS). I aim to raise £1800. I will be attempting to run the marathon in under three hours, so the next few months may break me.
The NDCS does a phenomenal amount for the 45,000 deaf children currently living in the UK. I have a deaf sister and have grown up interacting with the Oxfordshire Deaf Children's Society (ODCS). I have seen first hand the difference these charities make. I should explain that the money raised for the NDCS will not be used to try and cure deafness or to improve hearing aid technology. In fact, this technology is already mind-blowingly good. Deaf children face many problems beyond just not being able to hear. As a matter of fact, for some deaf children, the foremost issues they face are anxiety, isolation and low self-esteem stemming from communication difficulties.
The NDCS does genuinely life-changing work helping deaf children develop effective communication skills. It organises events and activities that help to raise the confidence of deaf children. The impacts of this support, in areas that many of us take for granted, allows these children to have happy social lives and successful careers. It also provides them with a network of people involved with the deaf community with whom they can get support for the rest of their lives.
I have seen first-hand the positive impact this charity has through my sister who, I wholeheartedly believe would not be where she is today without the support she received from the NDCS.
