2017 has been another successful campaign. We recently took 50 athletes to AAU South Texas Regionals and 35 of them qualified for the AAU Junior Olympics. This is a huge accomplishment in the world of Youth Track & Field. Junior Olympic events consist of the top 75-100 Athletes in each age division in each event over the entire Unites states and a few countries that are invited to participate each year. The fact that we had a very high percent of the Leander Spartans qualify is an amazing feat and a testament to the hard work these athletes put in over the course of the hot Texas summer. Usually teams that are twice the size of the Spartans don’t qualify 35 athletes. I am very proud of this group.
In a day and age where it seems like all teens want to do is play video games, not apply themselves and have their face in a device on social media, it is refreshing to see young people with goals, work ethic and purpose. It was truly a hard fought effort across many practices and long track meets to make it to this point. As many of you know the 2017 AAU Junior Olympics is being held in Ypsilanti, Michigan. While many of our athletes and their families will be making this trip and focusing on the work it takes to be successful there, there are a few that are not quite as fortunate and their focus now turns to the reality of affording to make the trip. The purpose of this fund raising effort is to help raise funds for those Spartans among us that are just as deserving as the rest and look to find a way to make the trip to Junior Olympics a reality. We have a very short window of time to gather these funds and secure accommodations for these athltes.
I am asking each Spartan Family, friend, and supporter of the Leander Spartans to come together and help us in our efforts to get these few athletes Michigan and realize their dream of competing as a Junior Olympian. Remember every little bit counts and your support can help positively shape the life of a young athlete in a very positive way.
