2006 Beta Gamma Hugh Shields Flag Commendation
Donation protected
At the 2007 Northern Division Conference, the Beta Gamma Chapter was awarded Delta Tau Delta’s most distinguished award. The Hugh Shields Award for Chapter Excellence recognizes the Top 10 Delt chapters in the nation for excelling in chapter operations. The Hugh Shields award remains the highest award among Delt chapters.
As Delts, we understand that you strive for excellence but can never truly achieve it.
After consulting with a few Beta Gamma Alumni, the Chapter Advisors (Ryan Ring and
Bruce Peterson) would like to commemorate the hard work of the chapter members
who earned Beta Gamma their first Hugh Shields award. We firmly believe giving the
chapter a constant reminder of what excellence looks like will push the current
members and executive board to new heights.
Typically, once a chapter receives a Hugh Shields flag, they can keep it for one year.
After the year is complete and the chapter does not remain in the Top 10 Delt Chapters, the chapter is required to send it back to the Fraternity’s Central Office. Still
having the 2006 Hugh Shields flag is unique, as members have passed down this flag
year after year for nearly 20 years. Thankfully, it has remained safe, but the fear as we
advance is that it could get lost forever. Bruce and Ryan worked with the Fraternity on
an agreement to ensure this flag remains with Beta Gamma.
Having said all that, the Hugh Shields Flag Commemoration Campaign is to
permanently frame the 2006-2007 Hugh Shields Flag and securely hang it within the
library room of the Delt House at 12 Langdon St. One corner of the library will be
dedicated to this framed flag and will include a plaque describing the Hugh Shields
award and recognizing the work done by the 2005-2007 chapter members. We also
plan to include all donor names for this campaign on the plaque.
The total cost of preserving the Beta Gamma 2006 Hugh Shields Flag campaign is
$2,700. The campaign funding will professionally frame the Hugh Shields flag, produce
a commemorative plaque, professionally install the framed flag by the Beta Gamma
House Corporation property management company, and, if room permits, install a
copy of the 2006-2007 Beta Gamma Composite.
We hope campaign donations exceed our goal, so contributions above our target
funding goal will fund the Beta Gamma Chapter Education Fund (CEF) through the
Delta Tau Delta Foundation. This Beta Gamma CEF supports scholarships and
fellowships for current Beta Gamma members to attend conferences like Karnea,
regional conferences, and leadership programs like Compass or PresX.
We hope you will join us in ensuring excellence at Beta Gamma remains a constant
focus for future generations.
