2 x 7 x Venice and its Lagoon

The challenge
On the 7th March 2021 * I will challenge myself to run 2 stretches the cycling route where the Sile reaches the lagoon (from Portegrandi to CapoSile), then following the lagoon and reaching a large and touristic sea-side destination (from Caposile to Jesolo).
I will run them back-to-back for a total of 14 miles (22 km) ** which at this point in my training will be a challenge to train for!
Why have I chosen this route?
It symbolises many things. Firstly, it’s a clear picture of the transitional nature of the Venice lagoon at the interface between sea and land. Secondly, one of the major threats to the lagoon nowadays is the lack of sediments which are traditionally brought in by the rivers, due to the majority of the tributaries being diverted around the 17th century (the Sile itself was diverted in 1683) – but there is hope, as the run will go past ‘Life lagoon refresh’ a big European project which is bringing some of that freshwater back. And thirdly, it arrives in Jesolo, a big tourist destination famous for the summer parties, camping and to be used as a base for day trips to Venice. The type of mass tourism that has been contributing to the degrade of the city, and now it’s the right time to rethink of the future and the role of these areas for Venice.
Why 7?
It’s a magic number. So I decided to bet on it.
Plus - the ocean covers more than 70% of our planet’s surface, and according to the latest reports only 7.7% is covered by protected areas... another 7.7% comprises important subtidal habitats which stock a lot carbon.. SO, let's think about this magic number!

Since travelling will be off the charts and running together will most likely still be off the chart – join me from wherever you are ! The idea is to do 2 x 7 – it can be km, miles, minutes, hours.. it can be a run, a walk or whatever challenging activity of your choice! Why joining?
This challenge is aimed to raise money and awareness for the preservation of Venice and its Lagoon. How? Raising funds for the association ‘We are Here Venice’ - a non-profit association that addresses Venice’s challenges as a living city and advocates evidence-based approaches to policy making. With many projects already completed , people involved and many many interns WAHV is an extremely active NGO . And we all know both how much we need NGOs work right now but also how badly they have been hit by the crisis. So – let’s all make some worthwile effort!

2 x 7 x Venezia e la sua Laguna
La sfida
Il 7 marzo 2021 * mi sfiderò con un percorso di corsa lungo due tratte di pista ciclabile, la prima dove il Sile raggiunge la laguna (da Portegrandi a CapoSile), e la seconda costeggiando la laguna e raggiungendo una meta turistica balneare (da Caposile a Jesolo). Li correrò uno dopo l'altro per un totale di 14 miglia (22 km) ** che a questo punto del mio allenamento sarà una sfida per cui allenarsi!
Perché ho scelto questa strada?
Simboleggia molte cose. In primo luogo, è un'immagine chiara di come la laguna di Venezia sia un’habitat di transizione, posto all'interfaccia tra mare e terra. In secondo luogo, una delle maggiori minacce per la laguna oggigiorno è la mancanza di sedimenti tradizionalmente portati dai fiumi, a causa della deviazione della maggior parte degli affluenti intorno al XVII secolo (il Sile stesso fu deviato nel 1683) - ma su questo tema c’è speranza, dato che la corsa andrà oltre "Life lagoon refresh", un grande progetto che vuole gradualmente riportare un po' di quell'acqua dolce. E infine, la strada arriverà a Jesolo, grande meta turistica famosa per le discoteche, per i campeggi, per le spiaggione e come soggiorno da utilizzare come base per gite giornaliere a Venezia. Il tipo di turismo di massa che ha contribuito al degrado della città, e ora è il momento giusto per ripensare al futuro e al ruolo di queste zone per Venezia.

È un numero magico. Quindi ho deciso di scommetterci. Ma puoi iscriverti anche tu! Dal momento che viaggiare sarà fuori classifica e correre insieme molto probabilmente sarà ancora fuori classifica, unisciti a me ovunque tu sia! L'idea è di fare 2 x 7 - può essere km, miglia, minuti, ore .. può essere una corsa, una passeggiata o qualsiasi altra attività impegnativa di tua scelta! Questa sfida ha lo scopo di raccogliere fondi e consapevolezza per la salvaguardia di Venezia e della sua Laguna. Come? Raccogliere fondi per l'associazione "We are Here Venice", un'associazione senza scopo di lucro che affronta le sfide di Venezia come città vivente e sostiene approcci basati sull'evidenza al processo decisionale. Con tantissimi progetti già completati, molte persone coinvolte e soprattutto tant* stagist* giovan* WAHV è una ONG estremamente attiva. E sappiamo tutti quanto abbiamo bisogno del lavoro delle ONG in questo momento, ma anche quanto duramente siano state colpite dalla crisi. Quindi, facciamo tutti uno sforzo e iniziamo gli allenamenti !
