2 DAYS- Performance piece

I am planning on doing a 48-hour performance piece called 2 days near the end of January 2023. The performance will take place in a 2x2 meter wooden box, which I will not leave for 48 hours. I will have no social interactions with anyone outside the box. The only objects I will have in the room will be basic survival necessities and drawing and painting materials.

The aim of the performance is to reveal human nature. I aim to express innate ideas through drawing, writing and painting. I have extensively researched the ‘Duality of Human Nature’, exploring sociologists and books. Emile Durkheim (French sociologist) once said, ‘Man is only man because he is civilised. It is civilisation that made man into what he is; it is this that distinguishes him from the animal’. Durkheim’s insight inspired me to be detached from society for the performance- free from rules, judgment or opinion, to be purely vulnerable and honest. My performance piece will challenge me in many ways, particularly how transparent I will be throughout the 48 hours. In the moment, I will feel like I am in a private space; however, as soon as I leave that space, I will be playing with the boundaries between public and private. Because the room will be exhibited as well as the videos of my performance.

In order to fulfil my project, I am in need of funds to support my performance piece. The funds would go towards constructing a 2x2 wooden room, renting cameras that can run for 48 hours, lighting and sound equipment and projectors to display the performance for an exhibition. Surplus funds will go to Under the Same Sun- a human rights organisation that promotes the well-being of people with albinism, that are marginalised and misunderstood in Tanzania- through education scholarships for children, youth and adults.
