This is Tyrel. He is one of the most outstanding young men I have ever encountered in my education career. Tyrel moved with his family from Ogden, Utah to Granbury, TX when he was very young. I met him his freshman year when he showed up for freshman football camp. I became his position (WR) coach and continued to coach him for the next 4 years. Following an outstanding year as sophomore on JV he earned a spot on the Varsity team. He had a great junior year season and was looking forward to his senior year in a starting role. Unfortunately, that never happened as he suffered a devastating knee injury tearing both his acl and mcl during spring football. He knew in April that he wouldnt be able to play a single game come the following fall. This is where Tyrel's character really began to shine. At the football banquet following his senior year I spoke to the audience of how I will use Tyrel as an example to players and parents for the rest of my career. When Tyrel's senior year began and he was still occasionaly using crutches from the summer surgery, he continued to show up to every single early morning practice and was not late even once. He participated in every team activity that his injury would allow, mentored younger athletes, and never hesitated to do the worst job in football practice, snap for the 7on7 drill. I've coached many players in my career in this same situation and most check out because there's nothing really left in it for them as an individual. Tyrel was quite the opposite. He's simply a gleaming example of being a great teammate and making the absolute best of a really difficult situation. Any opportunity I get to speak about adversity he is always the first person that comes to mind. We all face adversity in some form or fashion but how this young man handled it with a smile on his face and a joke to ease the pain was inspiring to me.
Now to the important part, throughout all of his success and perserverance on the football field and track (yes, a multi-sport athlete) Tyrel has managed to earn an outstanding GPA of 4.37 and will graduate in the top 25% of his class! He is an outstanding leader amongst his peers and a favorite of all of his teachers. Tyrel earned acceptances to Tarleton State University and Texas A&M at Corpus Christi. Tyrel has chosen to attend Texas A&M at Corpus Christi to pursue a degree in mathematics. The current obstacle facing Tyrel is that he does not have any means of transportation to commute from Granbury to Corpus and to get around town while he is there. Though I'm 100% positive Tyrel is resilient enough to handle this hurdle as he has in the past, I sure would like to help him financially to get in to his very first set of wheels. He has completed his driver's education and his family can handle the insurance addition of a new and young driver but not quite the cost of a vehicle. I am setting a humble goal of $2,500 to get him in to something somewhat reliable for a 6 hour one way commute to college. Every dollar donated will go directly to the cost of the vehicle and I will update pictures once we surprise (hopefully) him with his first ever vehicle. Thank you in advance for any contribution you can make towards this fine young man no matter how big or small the amount might be. Rest assured, Tyrel will take advantage of the opportunity to get an education and contribute to making our society better as a whole.
