In Loving Memory of Gilbert Torres, Jr. - A Beloved Father, Brother, Grandfather, and Uncle Retired NYPD School Safety Office Gilbert Torres, Jr. passed away on Sunday, April 12th, 2020 from COVID-19 related complications. The 56-year-old single father of three was living in a Staten Island nursing home at the time of his passing; he moved there in 2014 after experiencing health complications six months after commencing his retirement. Prior to his retirement Gilbert worked in several Staten Island Schools for over nearly two and a half decades. Whether you called him Gil, Chi-Chi, Toro, Torres or Pop, it didn’t matter as they all refer to a kind man with one of the biggest hearts in the world. Born and raised in the Coney Island section of Brooklyn, “Pop” (as he was affectionately called by his children, David, Carla, and Miguel Ramos) moved to Staten Island with his family later on in his childhood where he attended Port Richmond High School. Pop was a charismatic man who loved motorcycles, long drives, and music. When he wasn’t at work He could be found DJing a crowded party or spreading smiles and laughter with his infectious energy. He was also likely to be found somewhere helping a friend in need. Pop was a hard worker, a great provider, and a source of unending generosity and love; he made certain to instill those same qualities and characteristics in his children.
