Recovery for Rowan

Donation protected
Edit 4/9/2020: After 16 days in the hospital, I was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Read more below:

My name is Rowan. I’m a 30 year old mortician in Florida, and I’ve been in the hospital for 11 days with a strange lung infection.

The doctors here have tested me for everything that they can, from Covid-19 to tuberculosis to staphylococcus and all of my tests and cultures have come up with the same answer: “we just don’t know.”

Granuloma was ruled out as well, so my left lung has a mystery disease that has created deep abscesses in the tissue and left behind cavities and scar tissue, which makes it hard to breathe. I’ve been coughing up fluid from my lung for over a month now, and for a while my symptoms mimicked those of Covid-19, which is why I was admitted and how the doctors discovered that my lung is up to some shenanigans they can’t explain.

On Friday, 4/3, I am scheduled for a lobectomy of my lower left lung lobe and wedge resectioning of my upper left lung lobe. To say that I am stressed out and scared is putting it lightly, but I am also excited to finally be on the path to recovery so that I can move on to the next chapter of my life.

You can imagine that the road to recovery is going to be long and hard, and being out of work for a minimum of ten weeks is going to hurt. No one ever expects this sort of emergency, especially my family. My wife was diagnosed with Stage 2 Ovarian Cancer in October of 2018, and though she’s a year in remission (as of 3/21/2019!), medical expenses for her treatment and surgery have wiped anything resembling savings that we’ve had. She’s been unable to work while still recovering, so I was the “breadwinner” for our home.

We lived paycheck to paycheck, and now we will be losing that for the next two months at least.

Funds raised here through GFM will go to:
- Rent
- Groceries
- Prescriptions for both myself and my wife, Emily
- All follow-up care post my surgery
- Utilities
- Gas (gotta get back and forth from doctors)

In the case of something going terribly wrong during my surgery, all funds from this GFM will go to taking care of my wife and helping her. Making sure that she is taken care of, safe and healthy and happy, is my main priority.

If you made it this far, thank you for reading. If you’re moved to donate, I thank you from the bottom of my heart for your kindness and generosity. I know I’m just a stranger asking for help on the internet, and any little amount means the world to me because I know it helps, and I know it’s a rough time out there right now. If you’re unable to help financially (I get that!) but you want to help out somehow, please share this campaign.

I wish I had more to offer you as to why you should kick a few dollars my way, but I can promise pictures of my cats (one is very fat) with all campaign updates!
