Help Pay for Funeral of Marine Andy Gawrys.
Donation protected
We are sad to report the passing of a local Polish American hero. We send our heartfelt condolences to the family of Andrzej "Andy"Gawrys.
The Polonia Business Association would like to help the family of this brave Marine pay for his funeral expenses. Andy leaves behind three young boys.
Hero is an accurate description of this Marine. In 1995, Andy was one of the Marines who rescued Airforce captain Scott O'Grady from Serbian forces. The Marines went in and did their job. The movie "Behind Enemy Lines" is loosely based on the event.
As described by retired Colonel David Hackworth in the Sun Sentinel, it was dark when the rescue force's choppers lifted off the deck of the USS Kearsarge (ITAL) and headed for the Bosnian badlands. Faces camouflaged, weapons locked and loaded and guts churning, sat aboard two choppers flying at treetop level. The Marines bolted out of the first chopper and secured the perimeter. As the second chopper landed, O'Grady hightailed it from the edge of the woods and climbed aboard.
Twenty minutes out of the landing zone the situation escalated. Serb missiles corkscrewed through the sky, and automatic weapons fire pinged off the choppers' rotary blades, slamming into both troop carriers.
They made it back saving the captain's life.
My heartfelt condolences to the family of this brave Marine. Cielibyśmy wyrazić nasze najgłębsze współczucie. Please help us make it easier for the family with this unexpected expense during this difficult time. Any additional funds will be donated to his family
